Is Pregnancy Different today?
The pregnancy experience in the US has changed quite a bit over the years. Such things as reveal parties exist, she can find out in weeks rather than months, she can see a 4D image of her little one, and the actual birth day is planned far in advance (thanks to the increase in C-sections). Couples can even alter the genes and screen for diseases, as well as combine their sperm and egg, but grow the baby in a different body. Times have definitely changed. In some ways, it has become safer, especially in the cases of emergency birth. In others, however, the story is much different. The birthing process is now feared more than ever, and the pregnancy itself is being treated as a “condition” with drugs and surgery, rather than a miracle. What has happened? Pregnancy and birth used to be a celebrated event and involved the whole community. It was an emotional time full of joy and excitement that energized everyone around her. Now, she worries about this condition and that worse case scenario. The birthing process is now a sterile, surgical procedure that is analogous to removing a tumor. Grotesque instruments and invasive procedures have hijacked the once peaceful and natural event. What has happened? Why has it happened? Can we go back? Should we go back? Lets look deeper into what pregnancy has become, and what it can truly be.
Pregnancy, as I mentioned before, has become a very feared process. Blood pressure this, blood sugar that, and every other sensation she could possibly feel has some sort of link to a disease or complication (according to WebMD). Of course it is good to monitor her progress, but it is even more important to trust her body. In her genes are thousands of years of instruction and in her mind a mother’s intuition. These two combine to be the most powerful source of information a woman can find, but these days, it has become the most difficult source to trust. So I encourage her to ask the doctors “why?” and seek advice from those that have been through the birthing process. I also encourage her to trust her instincts and tune in to the information that has guided us for the past thousands of years.
Pregnancy and Pain
What I am not saying, is that pregnancy and birth should be a pain free, completely comfortable process. It would be foolish to assume adding 25-30 pounds and a growing, moving baby would be peaches and rainbows. It doesn’t mean, however, that she needs drugs to make it through her pregnancy. More and more women are turning to alternative methods to both ease back pain, nausea, headaches, and other discomforts as well as reduce labor time. (For a terrific birth class to train your mind visit Temecula Hypnobirthing) Interested? Let me give you some facts:
- 75%-84% of women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy report relief of back pain
- Substantial relief from back pain is experienced with an average of 1.8 chiropractic treatments.
- Women who seek chiropractic care during pregnancy report a 24% shorter labor and delivery time than those who don’t seek care
- Women who seek chiropractic care while pregnant with multiple babies first report a 31-39% shorter labor and delivery time
- It takes approximately 8 weeks for pelvic and uterine ligaments to return to normal after labor and delivery. (Meaning they are extra susceptible to becoming misaligned)
Chiropractic works by removing nerve tension and gently realigning the spine. This removes the extra stress on the ligaments, muscles, and nervous system caused by the misalignment. The end result is her body functioning better than ever, and more easily adapting to changes in her body. It also reduces the stress the baby feels in utero. Chiropractic is completely safe for the mom and baby, and helps her enjoy a more peaceful pregnancy.
One more note on birth: a breech baby is not automatic surgery.
- Breech presentations are reduced using the chiropractic Webster Technique with a success rate of 84%-92%
Whether you are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant, or know a friend who is pregnant pass this information along. You never know who wants reduced labor time and back pain while growing a little miracle inside. Pregnancy does not need to be feared, rather it can be enjoyed by everyone, including the mom.
